Problem of the Week - Week 10

Sylvester measured his pulse and found that his heart beat is at a rate of 80 beats per minute at rest.  At this rate, how many days will it take his heart to beat 1,000,000 times?  Show and explain your work.

Quiz Alert!

There will be a 25 point quiz on ratios, unit rates and unit prices, and testing proportions on Friday, November 2nd.  It will be on the second nine weeks grading period.  A study guide will be given.

Problem of the Week - Week 9

Mary sells mugs in two sizes:
     small for $2.50
     large for $5.75

Yesterday she made $56.  Before her shop opened that morning, she had 200 mugs.  At the end of the day she has 188 mugs.

How many mugs of each kind (price) did she sell?

Optional Extra Credit Assignment due 10/29 worth 4 points

Write up to four original word problems on lined paper.  The word problems must involve either decimals or fractions.  Each word problem must have a different operation needed to solve it (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).  Solve each word problem showing all work and labeling answer.  Each word problem is worth an extra credit point.

This optional extra credit assignment is due Monday, October 29th.

Problem of the Week - Week 8

Ron watched the following tv:  On Saturday he watched from 9:30am - 10:30 am, 1:00pm - 3:30 pm, and 8:00pm - 10:00 pm.  On Sunday he watched from 1:00pm - 2:30 pm and from 8:00pm - 10:00 pm.  He watched sports half the time, movies one third of the time, and cartoons the rest of the time.  How many minutes did he watch cartoons?

Correction - Test worth 40 points (not 50)

The test on Thursday will be worth 40 points instead of 50 points.

Benchmark Alert!

Students will take the first nine weeks benchmark exam for math on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (October 23rd and 24th).  The first day will be multiple choice (30 pts), and the second day will be an open ended response (4 pts).  Both of these assessments will count as a grade for the first nine weeks and cover all material from the first nine weeks.  We will review Friday and Monday, and the students will be given a study guide.

Test Alert!

There will be a 50 pt Test on fractions (a second fractions test) on Thursday, October 18th.  A study guide will be given Tuesday, and we will review on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Quiz Alert!

There will be a short 10 point quiz on Friday, October 12.  The quiz will be on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  We will review in class the day before and students will have a worksheet from which to study.

Conrad's Taxi Service charges $1.50 for the first mile and $0.90 for each additional mile.  How far could Mr. Kulp go for $20 if he gives the driver a $2 tip?  Show work!
